America’s Sheltered Lives

I honestly think that many people in my country grow up in a sheltered environment and therefore live with rose-colored glasses on. They seem to have no idea what the real world is actually like. The closest they have ever gotten to violence is seeing an R-rated movie.

These are often the same people who are protesting American “violence” against ISIS. The irony of this is that our police are often in the streets to protect these protestors. And if the protestors feel as though the cops have mistreated them, they are the first to go nuts, demanding their rights and screaming about police brutality.

The funny thing is, they are protesting the idea of the American government trying to protect innocent people from being murdered by the thousands in cold blood, yet at the same time they want justice for their supposed mistreatment by the very government that they are protesting. Now, that is stupid! If these American citizens want our government to turn the other cheek abroad, then at the least they need to demonstrate the same attribute themselves at home.

I am thankful that these passive people were not around when Adolf Hitler was torturing Jews in front of their own families and murdering them by the millions in gas chambers. I am sorry, but terrorists must be stopped. We have to develop a prayer strategy that ultimately transforms Muslims, especially the radicals. But in the meantime, love demands that we protect the innocent. In fact, Jesus said, “Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends” (John 15:13). Jesus laid down His life through a violent act of grace. He died in an act of violence to deliver us from sin, defeat our enemy and give us abundant life.

Sometimes we are called to “Suffer hardship . . . as a good soldier of Christ Jesus” (2 Timothy 2:3). We cannot wait until the terrorists come to our towns to defeat them. We must assist other countries proactively in defeating them. Otherwise, five years from now your children will be fighting them in our streets. We have to make the cost of joining terrorist cells so high and the reward so minuscule that it makes no sense whatsoever to join them. This is what governments are commissioned to do in these times—bring the wrath of God on those who choose evil, so that others will fear doing the same. (I am simply repeating Paul’s words to the Romans.)

My country is blessed, but it is not perfect. Our history is riddled with numerous mistakes, many of which we covered up with lies. But we cannot wallow in our past regrets, nor can we become lethargic about our future destiny. It is incumbent upon us as the people of God to embrace both the Lamb and the Lion, so that we respond with wisdom and vigilance to the dangers that lie before us.

We can defeat this terrorist enemy we face in our time from the inside out.
